OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS - A group of Kansas firefighters has captured hearts nationwide with a simple but profound act of kindness. On a cold January morning, firefighters in Overland Park responded to an emergency call after a man collapsed while shoveling snow outside his home near 105th Terrace and Pflumm Road.
The man, who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, was treated on the scene by first responders from the Overland Park Fire Department, Lenexa Fire Department, and Johnson County Med-Act. He was then transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
But the story didn’t end there.
A Gesture of Kindness
After ensuring the man’s safety, the firefighters noticed his driveway remained half-shoveled, posing a potential hazard for his family. Without hesitation, the crew picked up their shovels and completed the task themselves. Their goal was to ensure the family could safely access the home while dealing with the aftermath of the medical emergency.
The Overland Park Fire Department later shared the story on social media, writing:“A man shoveling snow this morning suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. OPFD crews assisted @JoCoMedAct & @LenexaFire with treatment. Then, while the man was being transported to an area hospital, crews finished shoveling his driveway.”

Jason Rhodes, the public information officer for the Overland Park Fire Department, noted that such gestures are part of the culture among first responders. “Our folks do a lot of acts of kindness like this on a regular basis, and usually it goes unnoticed,” Rhodes said. “I think it’s just part of the culture for first responders.”
The incident has sparked conversations about the physical strain of shoveling snow, particularly in cold weather, which can exacerbate underlying health conditions. Experts advise warming up before starting, taking breaks, and using proper techniques to avoid cardiac strain or injury.
